An open expert meeting was held on the territory of DEPOT-2 within the framework of the first Road Council–2025, dedicated to solving the transport problems of the capital.
The first to present their proposals were the developers of the new Bishkek Master Plan until 2050, specialists from the Scientific Research Institute of Advanced Urban Planning from St. Petersburg.
Irina Grishechkina, the chief architect of the project, and Vera Frolkina, an expert on the transport section, spoke about the results of large-scale research.
Experts conducted a survey of traffic flows in 36 main points of the city and processed more than 3 thousand questionnaires of a sociological survey.
The main problems identified by experts are:
• 40% of highways do not comply with modern standards,
•85% of central streets are overloaded,
•77% of the roads in the center are parked, which reduces the capacity by half,
•North–South communication is complicated due to railway crossings,
•the level of motorization has increased 1.5 times — now there are about 330 cars per thousand inhabitants.
What is offered:
The developers propose to create a radial-ring transport system – with an external bypass of the city, a ring around the center and additional roads that will distribute the flows.
The main goal is to relieve the center of transit traffic and increase the priority of public transport.
Public transport today:
• only 36% of residents use it,
•87% of buses are overcrowded, the average speed is 10 km/h,
•travel time exceeds the norm by 63%,
•2,000 hectares of urban areas remain without access to public transport.
As part of the Master Plan, it is proposed:
•build 28 km of railway tracks,
•lay 63 km of tram lines,
•allocate 68 km of lanes for public transport,
•Create 19 transport hubs.
Expected results:
•increase in the number of public transport passengers by 54%,
•reducing the use of personal cars by 1.5 times,
•100% of residents will be provided with access to public transport,
•60% will be able to use high–speed modes of transportation.
In addition, the project provides for the expansion of the airport, the construction of bypass roads (railway – 183 km, highway – 89 km), 224 km of new highways and 9 overpasses, as well as the development of a bicycle network.
