Bishkek, being the administrative, political and economic center of the republic, attaches great importance to international cooperation with foreign cities and regions, which began on August 14, 1991, when the first city with which contacts were established was the city of Kumi of the Republic of Korea.
At present, the legal framework of modern relations of the capital municipality consists of agreements with 20 twin cities and 24 partner cities: CIS - 16, Europe and America - 9, Asia 14, Middle East 4. Bishkek is a member of such international intercity associations, as International Assembly of Capitals and Large Cities of the CIS (IPA), World Organization of Capitals "United Cities and Local Governments", Union of Municipalities of Turk's world etc.
Within its competence, the mayor's office of Bishkek establishes and maintains contact with embassies, consulates, honorary consuls and international organizations accredited in the capital. The Mayor's Office of Bishkek city, on the basis of partnership, twinning and mutual benefit, ensures the implementation of the policy of the capital municipality in the field of international relations. The legal basis for the international activities of the mayor's office of Bishkek is the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic on Interaction of State Bodies in the Sphere of Foreign Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic "and other regulatory legal acts of the Kyrgyz Republic.
In addition to the generally accepted goals in the field of international relations - international understanding and international exchange, the work of the metropolitan municipality is primarily aimed at strengthening the positive image of the capital, both within the country and abroad, by creating and maintaining favorable conditions for the sustainable development of the city and further growth in the well-being of its residents.
